That time between summer and fall. The transitioning of seasons. The days we still often find ourselves basking in the warm sun while the morning and evenings turn cool. The air becomes more dry and the sky more blue. It truly is some of the best weather of the year!
As glorious as these days can be, I used to find myself in a predicament as how to dress this time of year. Its not exactly fall boots, denim and chunky knit weather yet. Still, I feel out of place running around in my summer garb. So what do you reach for in your closet?
If you are like me, my wardrobe is divided. Spring and summer on one side. Fall and winter on the other. Finding the marriage between the two for the transitional weather can be tricky but I have learned a few pointers over these past couple of years . Now I love walking into my closet and merging seasons with my clothing.
Outfit Ideas for Transitioning from Summer to Fall
Dressing for transitional seasons becomes the ultimate game of mixing and matching. Taking a summer item and mixing it with a fall item. But which ones are you taking? Reach for the summer items that have great texture with and/or an appropriate color for fall. Accessories are also a great way to merge two seasons! Dust off your fall bags or introduce an accessory that will be on trend for fall!
Outfit 1
I do not shy away from wearing white all season long. That even goes for a white tee and loafers. Yet both of these have some added texture to them. This tee from the Point Sur collection at J Crew has raised “velvet” graphics in navy while these white loafers have a nice strong structure to them. I give this look a slight nod to fall with a bandana tied on the wrist. (Western wear is huge for fall!)
Outfit 2
No need to put away sandals yet! Again, go for texture and color. I cannot get enough of this yellow! It is the perfect yellow for this time of year. I’m pairing it with my most beloved distressed denim and adding a light cashmere sweater to help polish the look off.
Outfit 3
One of my favorite looks this time of year is pulling out a chunky sweater and pairing it with denim shorts. Adding street style sneakers and a woven bag (yes-take yours into fall!) makes for the perfect run around town look!
Outfit 4
Finally, I love still wearing my shorts. Trade in linen and white shorts for a pair of faux suede, velvet or leather ones. Add a classic button down. I love the wood button details on this and have been wearing it since spring! I finish off this outfit with another rich tone sandal and a bucket bag in my favorite yellow!
