There was once a time most of us would never consider wearing denim on denim. The term “Canadian Tuxedo” may come to mind! It was a look often considered too western, too cowboy and not mainstream enough! This celebrity couple Getty images of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears here might even be another reason denim on denim achieved such a bad rap! Yet somewhere along the way, it became much more acceptable to wear double denim at the same time. It is a street style look often captured! Nowadays, a denim on denim look can be a great basic outfit to put together. With that said, there are some styling tips to keep in mind when pulling off this look.
How to Style Denim on Denim
Basics:
Let’s start with the denim! Most of us also have at least one pair of distressed denim in our closet. When it comes to an everyday denim on denim look, I like the idea of wearing a well worn distressed pair of blue denim. The distressing helps break up the outfit a bit, particularly when the top and bottom denim are the same wash.
Beyond this look, it is also fun to mix and match and play around with other shades of denim when creating a denim on denim look! For other denim options on the bottom, I like the idea of skinny jeans in black denim and a darker chambray shirt paired with black ankle boots or suede pumps for a night out! White jeans look great with a white tank and a light blue denim jacket in the summer!
To start off the layering look on top, opt for a tee. If there is one universal basic in just about every women’s closet, it would have to be a white tee. There is rarely a time where a great white tee does not work. It is the perfect foundation to just about any look and especially with a denim on denim look! I love this white tee from Splendid that continues to be one of my favorite affordable basics.
Layering:
When it comes to adding the denim top to a denim on a denim outfit for an every day look, I usually like the wash to be in the same family as the denim on the bottom. I also love when the material is on the softer side. My one style tip here is to keep the denim shirt unbuttoned and the white tee exposed when it comes to a day to day look. My denim top is from Splendid and I have had it for years! J. Crew, however, as a nice selection of classic denim shirts to choose from here. In warmer months, I would absolutely leave this look at that. Yet at this time of year, I like adding a longer styled cozy cardigan as my final layer. A similar cardigan is available here
Accessorizing:
The color cognac is one of my favorite neutrals to pair with denim. This pair of ankle boots here, in the cognac suede, are almost identical to the pair I am wearing. In terms of a belt, this version is a complete 360 to the one I featured last week! The look and quality of this belt is far superior in comparison to the price. This belt is available here. To complete the look, I once again added my favorite gold necklace here.
