Have you ever walked into the bath and beauty section of World Market or scoped out the aisles at a true pharmacy or health food store and stumbled upon a collection of wooden bristle brushes? I usually will end up taking notice of any product that is aesthetically pleasing. So of course I fell in love with the simple look of this Norwegian beauty tool. The look of the brush is the least thing to get excited about when it comes to this product though! I came to learn that the benefits of using one, far surpasses it’s pleasing appeal.
Self-Care Sunday Beauty Series: The Benefits of Dry Brushing
The Benefits of Dry Brushing
I am always looking for better ways to better my body and up my beauty care regime. Body brushing easily fills these two squares. In short, when used, a dry brush stimulates the body’s entire lymphatic system. Back to Biology 101: the lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. Translation? By dry brushing, your body is getting an internal detox boost. Externally, the results are easier to see! An efficient way to get rid of dead skin cells, a dry brush does a wonderful job of exfoliating. Not only does your skin look and feel better, but the process itself is both stimulating and invigorating.
These benefits alone make the process worthwhile, but additionally, dry brushing fights inflammation, increases circulation, reduces the appearance of cellulite and allows for deeper hydration of oils and moisturizers post shower or bath.
Choosing a Dry Brush
When dry brushing, finding a proper brush is key. There are three sizes to consider. Ones that are designed with a long wooden handle are perfect for using on hard to reach places such as the lower back. The hand held size is the most ergonomically friendly to use for just about anywhere on your body. There is even a small size that is compatible to use on your face. The quality of the bristles is also essential to the benefits working. Look for firm bristles-cactus, vegetable or natural boar based are typical.
There is a dry brush pack offering all three sizes available here. The one I use and love is available here.
How to Dry Brush
Equally as important as to the quality of the brush, is the process of using the brush. Starting at your feet, use long, upward strokes or small circular motions. Work your way up the body towards the heart. Whatever part of the body you are at, it is important to always start at the bottom of the limb and work your way upward. For the stomach, work in a counterclockwise pattern. Although it is important to be firm when dry brushing, the skin should never be left scratched or damaged. If that is the case, be more gentle or choose a softer bristle.
You should be spending a good 3-5 minutes dry brushing.
When to Dry Brush
Dry brushing can be done before or after a shower or bath. If dry brushing before a shower, skip using the oil and apply afterwards instead. If dry brushing after a shower, then apply oil to the brush. It is usually recommended that dry brushing be done in the morning due to its stimulating effects.
Have you tried dry brushing? It has quickly become one of my favorite self-care routines!
